A
little over a week ago, I got to have a sort of "Fun experience" at
one of Jared's many appointments. Before Jared's transplant he has had tons and
tons of different tests, the worst one by far is the bone marrow biopsy. They
do this test to have a sample of Jared's Bone marrow to make sure the bone is
not infected by cancer and in order to determine the effectiveness of
chemotherapy. What this means in real life though is that they give Jared
moderate sedation and local anesthetics and literally drill into his bone so
that they can put a giant needle directly into his lower back/pelvis area and
draw out some marrow. This is a pretty minor procedure, but very painful and
just not fun.
This is the tool they use!
Jared was not very excited about this procedure, but had no fear. I, on the other hand, thought it sounded super painful and pretty scary. I went back into the procedure room with Jared to get him settled while he was getting all drugged up. As I was sitting listening to the nurse tell us all about the procedure I must of looked "excited" at least that’s what the nurse told me I looked like.... Awkward! I should not look excited for my fiancĂ© to get a giant needle stabbed in his back... Well, because I looked excited, and not like I wanted to barf all over the procedure room, the nurse asked if I would like to sit in on the procedure, I was a little nervous but excited to be able to watch!
During the Procedure
They put Jared's oxygen on and started giving him his drugs and he started to get silly, then he was out! The Doctor started by numbing the area and then started using tools to drill through the skin and to the bone. When they get to the bone they take blood samples and then they drill hard and take about and inch long sliver of bone out to test. They do this on each side and then they are done. Half way through when they were flipping Jared he kind of woke up and looked at me and said, "What are you doing here? I love you!" He continued to say "I love you so much!" over and over maybe 15 times until he finally fell back asleep! It was SO sweet! It made he happy that even his subconscious loves me hahaha :)
Jared healed up very nice and very quick. As I set and watched this procedure and how the doctor was so nice and explained every single step all along the way I realized how lucky Jared and I are to be able to have access to such an amazing facility as Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and how amazing the doctors and nurses are. Jared is still set for starting chemotherapy this Monday and he says he is feeling good about everything and just excited for it to start for it to be over!!! I just thought this was a cool experience for me and that I would share it! This was just one little step on our journey, but science and medicine is AMAZING and I am so thankful for it!
